Choosing the right TLD for your business in 2026

Tom Chen7 min read

The top-level domain — the part after the final dot — is the one part of your address you cannot easily change later. It shapes how memorable, credible, and findable your brand is. There is no single right answer, but there are clear trade-offs.

.com — still the default

.com remains the extension people type by reflex and trust without thinking. If the .com for your name is available and affordable, it is almost always the safe choice. The catch is scarcity: most short, generic .com names were registered long ago, which pushes new brands toward alternatives.

.io, .co, and .ai — the tech favourites

These have become second-nature in technology and startup circles. .io reads as modern and developer-friendly, .co works as a short stand-in for company or a .com alternative, and .ai has surged with the interest in artificial intelligence. They cost more than .com and carry slightly less universal recognition outside tech-literate audiences.

  • .io — strong signal for developer tools and SaaS.
  • .co — short, brandable, widely accepted as a .com alternative.
  • .ai — ideal when AI is genuinely central to the product.

Country-code TLDs

A ccTLD such as .com.au or .de signals that you serve a specific market and can help with local search relevance. Some carry eligibility rules — .com.au, for instance, requires an Australian presence. Choose one when your audience is primarily national and you want to look local.

The newer descriptive TLDs

Extensions like .app, .dev, .store, and .studio let the TLD describe what you do, which can make a short, meaningful name possible where the .com is long gone. A few (.app and .dev) enforce HTTPS by default, which is a small security bonus. The risk is that some audiences are still unfamiliar with them.

Whatever you choose, consider registering the matching .com as a defensive redirect if the budget allows — it protects the brand and catches visitors who type .com out of habit.
