Adding an A record to your domain

Point your domain, or a subdomain, at a server by its IPv4 address.

An A record maps a name to an IPv4 address — it is how you tell the internet which server answers for your domain. Adding one is the most common DNS task there is.

Steps

  • Go to DNS and choose Add record → A.
  • Set the name (@ for the root domain, or a label like www for a subdomain).
  • Enter the server IPv4 address as the value.
  • Set a TTL — 3600 seconds is a sensible default; lower it before a planned change.

IPv6 and propagation

To serve the same name over IPv6, add a matching AAAA record with the IPv6 address. After saving, changes propagate as caches expire — usually within the TTL you set.

Lower the TTL a day before you plan to change an A record, so the switch takes effect in minutes rather than hours.
