Configuring CNAME records

Alias one name to another so a subdomain follows a target host automatically.

A CNAME record makes one name an alias for another. It is how you point a subdomain like shop.example.com at a hosted service without hard-coding that service IP address.

Adding a CNAME

  • Go to DNS and choose Add record → CNAME.
  • Set the name (the subdomain, e.g. shop).
  • Set the value to the target hostname the service gave you.

The root-domain limitation

A CNAME cannot be used on the root of your domain (the bare example.com) because the root must also carry other records. To alias the root, use an A record, or an ALIAS/ANAME record where supported.
