How to flush your DNS cache
Clear stale DNS answers on your own device so you see a record change immediately.
After changing a DNS record, your own computer may keep serving the old answer from its cache until the TTL expires. Flushing the local cache lets you see the change without waiting.
Flush the cache
- macOS: run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
- Windows: run ipconfig /flushdns in Command Prompt.
- Linux (systemd): run sudo resolvectl flush-caches.
- Also restart your browser, which keeps its own short-lived DNS cache.
Global propagation is separate
Flushing only clears your device. Resolvers around the world hold their own caches until your TTL expires, so other people may still see the old value for a while. Lowering the TTL before a change keeps that window short.
